Doll-A-Day 2017 #120:Tressy Clone, Missy?

We had a lot of wind the other night. This is the lining to a robin's nest, complete with robin egg shell.

I found it in the undergrowth (sort of) under the dogwood tree when I went out to take pictures the other evening. I stuck it in my amaryllis pot because it is a thing of beauty.

UPDATE: Thanks to reader terryjfisher, collector of these dolls, for this information:  "This doll was sold as Swingin' Sally in the 1970s and then later as Missy in the early 1980s. The early ones have blue eyeshadow and later ones tend to have the green eyeshadow...so yours is probably a Missy."

Today's doll is this Tressy clone.

She is made of much cheaper plastic than Tressy...

The hand sculpt is similar, but this girl has more detailed fingers.

Her body and legs are thin, hollow plastic. Her head and arms are a soft vinyl. The arms are solid, and are strangely lumpy.

She has a very wide stance.

...and has much thinner hair than Tressy, but she has almost the same face and the same side glance eyes. (Even if she does have a more natural make-up free look.)

She's also a generally smaller scale than Tressy, even though she is 11 1/2" tall.
(Although when I bought her her head was mashed down on the neck knob and she was shorter.)

She also doesn't have Tressy's grow-hair feature.

Because her head just has a hole and sits on a plain round neck knob, she's able to tilt her head.
She's marked 'Made in Hong Kong' on her back.

She does have one thing Tressy doesn't have: a twist waist.

I found her Thursday at Goodwill. She was a massive 50 cents.

I bought her just for the lace vest she was wearing.

It's the vest to Francie's Satin Supper! I owned 3 real Barbie/friends outfits as a kid. One was Ken's Night Scene, one was Barbie's Dancing Stripes, and one was Francie's Satin Supper. I bought it with my own money. I didn't actually own a Francie at the time, unless my sister had already surrendered her to me by then. But I thought Satin Supper was so beautiful,I had to have it. Turns out she was also wearing Busy Francie's shirt. Her skirt seems to be homemade.
That's it for today. See you again tomorrow for another doll

Doll-A-Day 2017 #119,Shrunken Saturday:Crazy Little Red Haired Girl

Well I have a very good reason for being a day late with Shrunken Saturday,(And yes, there will be another new post today to catch me up.). Thursday my friend Lori called to see if I wanted to ride along with her to Kentucky to pick up her new horse. I said sure, and agreed to stay at her house Friday night so we could get a good early start. So I photographed three dolls Thursday evening to get ahead for the time I would be unavailable. I had the posts already written and figured I could just pop the pictures on when we got back Saturday about 7 or so.'The best laid plans of mice and men',and Tam, to paraphrase the quote. It was pouring rain and super dark and foggy, so we had to drive slowly until that cleared about mid day. Also, we took a wrong turn, and then had to avert a detour. We didn't even get to the horse place until 3:30. By that time it was 88 degrees in Kentucky! We had started out the day prepared to be chilly, and to be fair, it was freezing at home when we got back to Ohio. But we were melting in Kentucky. However, we did reach our destination without any major snags, and Lori loves her new baby.

Of course, since it took us longer to get there and back, (since it was farther than we thought), it was much later when we got back. It was already late, and once we reached Lori's house she had to unload the new horse, feed all the horses,(while her dad and I fed the dogs that had gone with us on the trip),unhook the horse trailer, and drop her vehicle back off to get the air conditioning repaired, and take me home. Once I got home I had stuff to clear up,a bath to take, and I wanted to spend some time with Ivy,since I hadn't seen her since Thursday night, because she was at school when I left on Friday. We tried to watch a movie, but we both fell asleep! When I woke up I tried to put the pictures on the Shrunken Saturday post, but then my laptop battery died and I said, 'forget it!', and went to sleep!
One thing that came from going all the way to Kentucky: I found these.

Look Bogi! I had looked all over trying to find an Ohio magnet for a trade I did recently with a reader from Hungary. No luck. But I go to Kentucky, and I manage to find Ohio magnets! Ridiculous! Guess what you're getting in your Christmas card Bogi!

Now.Shrunken Saturday's doll is this little kid.

She has a crazy look about her,but I like her.

She's 4" tall.

She's bendy.

"And it was thiiiis big."

"I didn't do anything..."

This has to be her original outfit.

Cotton shirt and felt skirt with a felt flower.

They're not removeable.
Molded underwear.

Her shoes are a separate piece from her legs, but aren't removeable.
She has some crazy red hair, which is a glued on wig.

She kind of reminds me of Harpo Marx.

I don't remember where I got her. Probably a doll auction.

"Wheee!!"
She's marked West Germany.

Don't forget to check out the regular post for today too.

Doll-A-Day 2017 #118: Pippi Longstocking

  Today's doll is Pippi Longstocking.

Pippi is based on the books by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren.

Lindgren's daughter Karin asked her mother for a story when she was home from school sick one day, thus Pippi was born.

Pippi was an unusual character.

Karin also named Pippi.

She lives with her monkey friend and her horse, but no adults. Pippi's clothes are patched.
She always wears thigh high, mismatched socks.

The first Pippi book was rejected when first submitted to a publisher in 1944, but was finally published in 1945.

She has some bright bloomers.

Lindgren went on to publish a total of 11 Pippi books.

Probably Pippi's most famous trait is her crazy red braids. They aren't supposed to curl up this much, but this girls braids won't stay in place.

This exact design was made in several sizes, including a tiny Pippi about 5" tall. This particular Pippi measures 16 tall to the top of her head, but her braids add another 3"!

Wow! Those sunspots in the lower right corner are pretty cool!

There have also been several Pippi movies made, and probably even more dolls.

This girl is made by Omega Toy.

The Astrid Lundgren licensing, sign of an authentic Pippi.
I have mentioned before that when I was in 6th grade there was a poster from the Pippi movie on the board that stood where we all lined up to go to lunch. I was embarrassed standing next to it, because I thought it looked like me.

Other than I didn't have the freckles. I had to grow into my big teeth. Ok. They're still pretty big.

Tomorrow is another doll. See you then.
