Little Red Riding Hood and the Latest on My Thyroid

I'm so behind with things! I said I'd show you some of my Goodwill finds from weeks ago. Here's one of them. This is Little Red Riding Hood.

She was sold by Ashton Drake in 1988.

She was sculpted by Dianna Effner, one of my favourite doll artists.

She has one of those typical sweet Effner children's faces.

This girl was at my favourite Goodwill. She's made of porcelain, with glass eyes.

I prefer vinyl, but I'll make an exception for her.
Her limbs have a wire armature,so they can be posed.

She has great curly hair that's still in good condition.

I think her hood can really go up on her head, but with her hair in such good shape I didn't think I'd risk anything!

She's 14" tall.

She should have a basket with a loaf of bread in it. Her clothes are all there though, including bloomers, undershirt, dress with built in slip and apron, stockings, cape, and shoes.

There is a problem with her shoes!

I could fix them, but it doesn't show,so I may not bother. The white bits of her clothing are browned, but I can get rid of that with some Stain Devils. (I really should do a commercial for them!)

I had my thyroid ultrasound on Monday. You know, the ultrasound my doctor didn't think was necessary because he said, "If you had a goiter I could see it." (A goiter is an enlarged thyroid.) I had to really keep stressing that I was still having trouble swallowing and "there's something going on in my neck!" I pressed for it, and he finally agreed to write an order for one. So,I had it, and guess what:I have a goiter! And not just a goiter, but one with 'multiple nodules'! So now he is sending me to...are you reading this Barb? ...an endocrinologist! After he insisted I couldn't have a goiter! They said they might have to biopsy my nodules. Ack! How do they do that?! Is there a cut involved??!!
My appointment isn't until the 17th of April! I'm still having trouble even with the 2 extra half pills a week,so I hope I do ok until the appointment.I have been feeling pretty bad the day before I add the half pill,as if I've run out of medicine and it really helps when I take more. My heart has been getting fluttery again and some days my throat really feels like I'm being choked. I'll let you know what happens.

  2. She's adorable. Love Dianna Effner's work. And good to hear you're finally making progress with your doctor. Hopefully the biopsy sounds scarier than it is and everything stays ok until you get into your specialist.

  4. I'm so glad that you're going to an endocrinologist! Yes, an ultrasound can tell a lot about thyroid health, much better than a doctor can see, especially one as stupid as the one you have. If your doctor can, he will probably just use a needle to do your biopsy, which doesn't sound much fun either, but you'll hopefully get so many answers this way, that will lead to better treatment. Your thyroid working properly might help with your weight, too. I hope everything works out for you. You can email me if you need anything.

Oh, and the doll is gorgeous, and such a good find!

    1. Did they use a needle on Mr.BTEG? How do they do that? It would be nice to know what I'm looking at,since otherwise I will imagine the worst! As for the doctor not seeing the lump, the other day I asked my friend Lori if she could see it, and she could. When I got home I looked where she said she could see a lump, and I saw it too! Why couldn't he see it?! Stupid AND blind!

  5. I accidentally commented first from the wrong browser, so that other one will probably end up as spam, just to let you know.

    1. The comment was in the right place, and I published it. Then when i was going to 'published' so I could respond,I don't know what i hit, but it disappeared! I went to spam in case there was one in there, and that's where I found it! It let me retrieve it,thank goodness. By the way,the lump is so puffy today that I'm wheezing when I breath, and coughing.I can;t wait for my appointment with the endocrinologist!

  8. I'm sorry to hear about your thyroid troubles! Good for you for following your instincts and insisting they do an ultrasound. I had a large nodule growing on my thyroid a few years ago..It was about 3cm (which was big!) and I ended up having a needle biopsy done. It was a total breeze..please don't feel worried! Basically, they give you some localized pain blocks (like novacaine) and you lie flat on your back. There is someone that does an ultrasound at the same time, so the doctor knows where to draw out the fluid. They do use a needle, but I swear to you, I did not feel a thing. It was 100% painless and very fast. The whole thing took like 15 minutes. He made about 5 passes into varies spots to collect samples. After that, there may have been a tiny bit of soreness around the neck area, but nothing that I had to take any pain meds for. My results were "inconclusive" (I was worried about thyroid cancer), as they did not get enough cells. My nodule eventually kept shrinking and now it's only a few mm in size so I only have to back every year or so. Please don't be worried...the biopsy really isn't that bad at all! Best of luck!

    1. It sounds horrifying!! :0 I'm glad you told me the details though. I like knowing what to expect. It's not nearly as bad if you know what they are going to do. It's still a needle though, so that still freaks me out! I'm glad you're getting better. I supposedly have 'multiple nodules',so i hope that doesn't mean they need to biopsy each one!

  9. Hello, I hope you're doing well, I see it's been one year since you last posted. I inherited a collection of porcelain dolls when my mother passed away. It's been almost 20 years and it's time to take the girls out of the box and find them good homes. One of the dolls is a 1994 Effanbee Story Book Series "Red Riding Hood" MV103. She's lovely, with a cute outfit, a basket with some very old and crumbly loaves of bread, a stand and the paperwork attached. While looking for information about this doll, I found your blog. Would you be interested in owning her?
