Today we're looking at this guy. It's Hammer Time!
He's obviously MC Hammer.
Hammer, whose real name is Stanley Burrell, released his first album in the late 1980's,and became a huge star with the hit,"U Can't Touch This" in 1990. The song became the first rap single to be nominated for a Grammy for Record of the Year. Yeah, that's nice, but can I point out that what makes the song is the piece of Rick James' "Super Freak" that was sampled without permission?
In 1991 Mattel made two Hammer dolls. One wore a black mesh t-shirt and a shiny purple suit.
This version came with a microphone, glasses, and an 'exclusive cassette'. No idea what was on it. |
Both dolls had the same head sculpt, which is a really good likeness of Hammer..
This never removed from box guy has developed a 'greasy' face. |
He has Hammer's hair style too. |
The head sculpt was exclusive to the Hammer dolls, but he had the standard Ken body of the time. Hmm. I didn't realize Ken has those abs then.
The arms have the stupid bent pose, but they can at least lift out to the sides as well as up and down.
Hammer was known for his 'Hammer pants',sort of baggy harem pants.
This version of Hammer came with his microphone, glasses, and a boombox.
The boombox 'makes real rap sounds'. Either it just plays a random beat, or they are insulting Hammer's music.
That's today's doll. Check back tomorrow for another one.
Wow, what cool dolls. I had no idea they existed. Hammer came a little later than my doll time. The dolls do look remarkably like him.
ReplyDeleteThis is still on my wish-list. Funny enough I always thought w/ glasses he looks like a grown-up Steve Urkel/Jaleel White.
ReplyDeleteYou do have some interesting dolls there!
ReplyDeleteHe actually is quite similar to M C Hammer, isn't he!
The doll is a good likeness. I guess we know why he changed his name. Stanley Burrell Its Hammertine! Its Stanleytime! Its Burrelltime! Yeah, not the same ring as Hammertime.
ReplyDeleteHA!
