Doll-A-Day 2019 #137: Lilly Pulitzer Stacie

Today's doll is one of Emma's. She was after this doll for a while, after seeing it in a magazine ,but not being able to find it in stores. She finally found her at a doll show.

She's Lilly Pulitzer Stacie.

Stacie is Barbie's little sister. She has a different look now,but when she premiered back in 1992, this was the way she looked.

The Lilly Pulitzer version of Stacie has a little more refined paint job than regular line Stacie. She also has something regular Stacies didn't have: brown eyes.

Lilly Pulitzer Stacie came in a 2005 Silver Label set, which also included a Barbie. Emma probably wouldn't have minded having the Barbie too,but she got the Stacie loose at the doll show. Obviously somebody wanted only the Barbie.

Stacie has the usual Stacie articulation, being jointed at the neck, shoulders, and hips, with click bend knees that only have one click.

But at least she can tilt her head a bit.

Her dress has pockets and little bows on the sides

Her little scarf holds back her short hair, pretty much the only short haircut on a Stacie doll.

The Lilly Pulitzer dolls wear clothes based on those popularized by Lilly Pulitzer. Lilly Pulitzer was a fashion designer, but she was also a socialite. (She went to school with the future Jackie Kennedy, married the grandson of ta publisher and Pulitzer Prize founder, and her mother was the heir to the Standard Oil fortune.) Lilly's clothes were known for their bright colours and floral prints. Her clothes were so popular with other socialite types that her nickname was 'the queen of prep'.

Lilly Pulitzer.
In 1958 Lilly, suffering from what was probably postpartum depression, checked herself into a mental health facility. Her doctor came to the conclusion that there was nothing wrong with Lilly. She was just bored, and needed to find something to do. Lilly and her husband owned orange groves, and   Lilly got the idea to open an orange juice stand. When her clothes were ruined by orange juice, from squeezing oranges, she decided she needed something the juice wouldn't show up on. She also wanted something loose and comfortable to wear in the Palm Beach,Florida heat,as opposed to the tight waisted, fitted dresses of the time. And she needed something fairly hard to see through, because Lilly hated wearing underwear! She bought bright fabric at a local store, and came up with some colourful sleeveless shift dresses. Her customers liked the dresses so much that she started selling them at the orange juice stand. Eventually she began to sell more dresses than orange juice. Lilly's husband also encouraged her to sell her dresses in his fruit shop. When the first lady, Lilly's former schoolmate Jackie Kennedy, was photographed in a polka dot Lilly shift in 1962, the brand really became popular. By the beginning of the next year Lilly's dresses were being sold across the country. Lilly's view of her clothes was,“The Lilly girl is always full of surprises. She lives everyday like it’s a celebration, never has a dull moment, and makes every hour a happy hour.”

Lilly with some of her products. The Lilly brand is known for it's colourful floral prints.
By 1984 the Lilly Pulitzer brand had seen better days. Lilly closed down the company that year. But in 1993 the name was purchased by Sugartown Worldwide, who, with Lilly as creative consultant, brought the business back to life. The brand made a huge comeback. In 2012 the Lilly Pulitzer company was sold to Oxford Industries. Lilly passed away the following year.

Today Lilly Pulitzer goods are still popular. In 2015 the Lilly Pulitzer line for Target, which consisted of women's and children's clothes, home goods, and make up,sold out in hours. Target called it one of their most successful collaborations since they began product collaborations in 1999. You can visit the Lilly Pulitzer website HERE.
That's today's doll. See you again tomorrow for...oh. Ok. Another doll.

  1. She is VERY cute! Her paint job reminds me more of the When I read I dream series than the regular dolls

    1. Yes. She's painted much more realistically than the regular play line Stacies.

  2. This doll is really cute! I’ve never seen a Stacie doll like this before. I can see why your daughter wanted her so much!! The Barbie that came with her was quite beautiful as well.

    1. She has a less over the top face paint job than the play line dolls. Emma collected almost all the Stacies that came out,and this one was the hardest to find.

  3. I don't know what I like better, the doll herself or that retro-print dress!

    1. I'm not much on brightly coloured clothes or floral clothing, so I prefer the doll.

  5. This is a really cute and pretty doll, I would love one like this. I love how she doesn't look so skinny, she looks like a normal healthy kid and that appeals to me too. Thanks also for the information on Lilly Pulitzer, very interesting...and I love her fashions, as I really love bright coloured prints too.

    1. These Stacies did have a nice kid body. I debated switching Tammy World,(who had the Stacie body,as do all When I Read I Dream dolls),to a more posable body, because the new body ,from a Harry Potter Hermione, was so skinny. The legs of the Stacie body are nice and chubby like real kid legs.

  6. I love her! I will have to find one loose on Ebay if I can. I like her face much better than our modern ones.
