Doll-A-Day 2023 #63:Chuckles

Happy birthday to me! I'm 61 today, but still a kid at heart.

Today's doll is bound to cause some confusion. It has to me. She's Chuckles.

She's 23 inches tall.

She may not be the Chuckles you're familiar with. She was made by American Character, who began making dolls they called 'Chuckles' back in the 1930's. The first Chuckles dolls were compo babies. In fact, all the dolls made by American Character, and called Chuckles, were babies...until this girl, that is.

This version of Chuckles is all vinyl, and was made in 1961, and only in 1961. Consequently, she's hard to find these days.

She has rooted hair and painted on eyes. You can see the slightest of eyelashes painted at the corners of  her molded eyelids.

And that makes her expensive. This one was marked $425! To be fair, that's more than twice as much as I see them selling for online.

She does bear a family resemblance to American Character's Little Whimsies dolls, with her molded eyelids and half moon smile.

She is really cute, and if she weren't so expensive she might find her way onto my list.

See you again tomorrow for another doll. (I have GOT to get a new phrase.)
