Doll-A-Day 2019 #296: Frozen Charlotte

Today's doll is this tiny girl.

She's a Frozen Charlotte.

A Frozen Charlotte is a porcelain doll made all in one piece, although I think most people consider the dolls with one piece legs and joined arms to be Frozen Charlotte's too.

This girl is about 3 inches tall, but Frozen Charlotte dolls do come larger. Most are small though, since early on they were slipped into Christmas puddings.

The boy version of a Frozen Charlotte is called a Frozen Charlie.

This little girl is carrying a purse.

The name 'Frozen Charlotte' comes from a very old song called "Fair Charlotte",which, in turn, was based on a poem called,"A Corpse Going to a Ball". In the song/poem a girl named Charlotte goes on a sleigh ride. She refuses to bundle up from the cold because she doesn't want to cover her pretty dress. Subsequently, she freezes to death!

This girl has some paint left, but I'm not sure it's even original to her. She has a red neckerchief, and some yellow paint left on her hair.

That's today's doll.

See you tomorrow for another one.

  1. so the lesson is bundle up or die, nothing like a little terror to keep ya in line

  2. I never realised that was where the name came from, and to be honest never realised either that it related to a doll like this.

  3. I never knew there was a story behind these little dolls with non-moveable limbs. And I wonder how many people chipped teeth on it when they found it in the pudding?? From what is left of her paint, she is a nice little doll.
