Today's doll is a little Welsh girl.
She's about 7 inches tall. She's wearing a traditional folk outfit from Wales...or is she? There is some debate over whether or not these outfits were ever really widely worn in Wales, or if they were just a creation of Lady Llanover, a wealthy Welsh heiress and patron of Welsh arts, who was trying to promote the use of Welsh wool, which she felt was being given up in favour of cotton. The outfits don't appear to have actually been widely worn in Wales before 1830, although the big hats may have evolved from the Welsh women's habit of wearing men's felt hats.
Well, she's not actually wearing the hat, because, due to the way it's tied under her chin, it can't be pulled up on her head. |
(The shawl and checked apron are other parts of the supposed traditional Welsh costume.) You can read a good article about all this controversy, HERE.
I'm assuming this doll was a cheap souvenir doll. She's made of thin plastic. But she does have sleep eyes.
Her hair is glued on. She does need her eyebrows repainted. I know how she feels.
That's today's doll Tomorrow? Well, tomorrow is another doll.
She's cute but why does she look like she doesn't trust anyone. lol I will have to read the article, maybe she already read it.
ReplyDeleteWho knows what's gone on in her life. Something scared the eyebrows off her!
