Doll-A-Day 2023 #68: Little Laurie

eala    Today's doll is another I got at the recent doll show. I'm pretty sure her name is Little Laurie.

She's a Penny Brite clone, as if that weren't obvious. She has the same face as Penny, and, like Penny, is 8 inches tall. Pennt was made by Topper/Deluxe Reading from 1963 to 1970. Little Laurie was made by Amsco, in 1969, right at the tail end of Penny Brite's run.

She's marked 'Made in Hong Kong' on her back.

One major difference between Laurie and Penny is the hair. Laurie has dark hair. Penny was always a medium blonde.

And she has cute ponytails, tied with what I'm pretty sure are her original white hair ribbons.

Penny has sort of a bouffant bob.

Laurie has brown eyes! Penny's eyes are black, or sometimes a dark blueish grey.

She also has the same molded, painted teeth as Penny.

Don't you hate it when you get lipstick on your teeth?

Laurie has side glancing eyes, like Penny, but hers glance the opposite way. Penny looks to the right, and Laurie looks to the left. So if they were stood side by side, they could look at each other. (Or ignore each other, depending who was on which side!)

The weird thing about Little Laurie is, she came in a set that included furniture and accessories that were also direct copies of Penny Brite's.

Laurie's...

...and Penny's. It certainly was a lot easier to get away with ripping things off back then.

Laurie came wearing white hair ribbons, a green smocky sort of shirt with appliques and shoulder ties,  bloomer type shorts with elastic around the bottoms of the legs, and white shoes. (You can see her original outfit on the boxed set above.)  She was wearing a real Penny dress when I got her, so I changed her into this dress. I'm not sure if it's home made or factory. I would guess factory made.

It fits her perfectly. The dress was in the case with the dolls I think. I have had so much stuff pass through here lately, and I have been washing and reorganizing stuff. I'm losing track of where stuff came from. Did I already have that? Did I get that in that stuff I got recently? Some of the stuff I have looked over and dealt with so many times that I know for sure. But some of the stuff has been boxed up for a while, and I don't remember it.

As you can see from the picture above, Little Laurie is made of a much cheaper plastic than Penny's heavy vinyl. Her arms and legs don't bend like Penny's either.  Her fingers are more rough than Penny's.

Her legs have snaggy flashing and her feet aren't quite foot shaped. You can really notice it in the full length picture above. Her feet are really stumpy.

But, like Penny, her head is on a ball joint, allowing it to be posed in cute, tilted positions, or looking a bit up or down.

She was in a vintage metal doll case with a real Penny Brite, the original Penny Brite plastic case, and some clothes, both generic, and real Penny Brite ones. I asked how much Laurie was, and was told the whole case full of stuff was $10! I'll take it! I certainly don't need another Penny Brite, but my mom threw away my Penny case, and there were a couple of pieces of Penny clothing I didn't have yet, and a really nice version of 'Flower Girl'. So I'll be getting rid of the vintage metal case, and the odd clothes. I was going to get rid of the Penny too, but darn it! None of these Penny's are the same! I'll show you this one, along with her case soon, and you can see for yourself.

There were other Penny Brite clones, most notably New Zealand made Little Tuppence, (sold in New Zealand, Australia, and some parts of Europe), and in fact, Little Tuppence had a friend named Posing Penny, who looks very much like Little Laurie. Posing Penny also had dark hair, in two ponytails. But it's easy to tell Little Laurie and Posing Penny apart. Posing Penny has blue side glance eyes, that look the same direction s Penny Brite and Little Tuppence. (So, alas, Tuppence and her friend Penny can never look at each other.) Posing Penny could also, do I have to say it? Pose. She had the same bendy arms and legs as Penny Brite and Little Tuppence. The palms of her hands face the back, as opposed to Penny's and Little Laurie's, which are side facing.

You can see my other Penny Brite dolls HERE, and HERE. You can see my other Penny clones HERE and HERE.

That's the doll for today. Cute kid, isn't she? Tomorrow we'll look at another doll.

My All Time Top Ten Posts as of January 2020

Don't forget to check our Facebook page,(Except for you Dorothy.) for the latest posts, which include a really cute stop motion felt video!
A while back I did a post reviewing my top ten posts of all time. I thought it would be interesting to look at that again and see if anything has changed. So what are my all time Top Ten Posts?
Well the number one post hasn't changed. It's my post on Mrs. Beasley, her history, my life long love, and a Yard Sale Tale.

My Beasleys.

Who would have thought Mrs. Beasley would still draw such a mob?! I always wanted a Mrs. Beasley. Apparently, I'm not the only one with that obsession.
The second place post is even more strange, because they are dolls I think few people have even heard of. They're Violet Pickles and Ruby Buttons.

Maybe the creator of Violet and Ruby is the draw. He's E.J. Taylor,a doll maker who decided to write and illustrate a book series, Ivy Cottage, on Violet and Ruby, two live rags dolls who live with Miss Biscuit, the old lady who made them.

E.J. Taylor makes beautiful dolls, with a  lot of personality.

Or maybe it's just the words 'Ivy Cottage' that are the draw! If you Google Ivy Cottage a lot of shabby chic stuff comes up.
The third place goes to my post called Happy Beatles Birthdays Part 2. I covered various things including Christmas ornaments and figures. Oh. And Tammy's shirt.

Up at number four we have Little Miss No Name.

She was one of my favourite childhood dolls. I still love her, even if Ken thinks she looks like Ignorance and Want from "A Christmas Carol" and can't look at her!
Coming in at number five is an Ai doll,Bee Balm.

I've done posts on several Ai dolls, but none of them have reeled in as many views as Bee Balm. I have no idea why.
Number six is another doll few people have heard of, so his position on the list surprises me. He's That Kid.

That Kid and Mrs. Beasley are the two dolls I longed for the most as a kid. I have three of these boys now, including the one I finally got that still talks! I did a post with video so everyone could hear him, since I don't think anybody has posted his voice online. My video doesn't seem to work, but one day I'll get that fixed. He did come with his box and instructions, so if anybody is interested you can see that post HERE.
Number seven is another of my childhood dolls. She's Newborn Thumbelina.

My newborn Thumbelina,me, my mom,and my sister,Christmas day.

I asked for this doll one Christmas after spotting her at the local Hart's store. I think Mom and Dad must have bought her that day behind my back.
Number eight is a strange little kid. If you thought That Kid was weird looking, check out this Ratti Tjorven doll.

She's one of those dolls that you like, but, on the other hand... A lot of people seem to like her though.
Number nine is a real surprise. But maybe it shouldn't be. Maybe it's because a lot of people my age remember Topo Gigio fondly from the Ed Sullivan Show.

On the other hand, it could be because, unbeknownst to me, he has been popular all around the world since before the Ed Sullivan Show, and he still is in many countries.
It has just occurred to me that I should have started with number 10 and been counting down. Oh well. Too late now. So here's number ten. Another fairly surprising one. It's my post on Penny Brite.

Penny Brite was a doll made in the 60's by Deluxe Reading, but I don't know of many people that remember her, or collect her. I have my childhood doll, and my sister's...and a boat load of others now. (That's the boatload above.) I have posted another Penny, and a couple of clones, but this post tops those by a long shot.
So those are my all time top ten most popular posts. I last did this in 2016. Most of the top ten from that list are included here, even if some of them have switched their places around. At least one dropped off the top ten list. Penny Brite wasn't even on it the last time. I wonder what will be the Top Ten the next time I do this.

Doll-A-Day 2019 #165: Penny Brite Clone

Today's doll is one I got in a trade with a Flickr friend. She may look a little familiar.

She looks familiar, but she's not who she resembles. She has Penny Brite's face, but she's a clone.

She has Penny's dimples and eyes with the pie slice of shine in them...

...and that  toothy Penny smile.

She's only marked Hong Kong,so I have no idea who she might be.

She is actually taller than Penny.

Penny is 8 inches tall, while the clone girl is 9 inches.

There was also never a Penny Brite with black hair. Penny was always blonde.

Clone girl has sort of a Prince Valiant 'do,instead of Penny's fluffy hair with side flips.

She isn't made of the same quality plastic/vinyl as Penny. Her legs have thick mold lines and her  fingers have stray flashing too.

She also doesn't have the bendy limbs Penny has.

She can only do the spread legged sit.

She also has a weird hunk of scalp sticking up out of her hair.

You can see my posts on Penny Brite HERE and HERE,and my post on a different Penny Clone HERE.

The dress she's wearing is a random dress I had that fits her. I think it belongs to Cricket.

So long!

That's today's doll. See you again tomorrow for another doll.

Doll-A-Day 2017 #265: Penny Brite

Today's doll is a girl I got at the flea market a few weeks ago.

She's Penny Brite..

I went into a lot of detail about Penny Brite dolls in my post on Penny Brite during the original doll a day,(You can see that post HERE.),so I won't go into much here. I will say that Penny was made by Topper/Deluxe Reading.

And she's 8" tall.

She's a doll from my childhood era,produced from 1963-1970.

I have my childhood Penny, and my sister's too. But this girl was only a dollar, and when I bought her she was wearing this:

It turned out to be Skipper's 'Dream Ins' nightgown. So, yay! I actually didn't have that yet.

Her head is on a ball joint, so it can be tilted and posed in cute ways.

Her cute side glance eyes work well with this.

Penny wasn't going to stay, but when I got home I found that her right arm was torn at the shoulder, so I guess she's going to hang around.

She's wearing the coat from the Penny Brite set 'Travel Set'.

The camera is a Tammy accessory. (Not me. The doll Tammy.)

Or is it? It could just be a clone outfit, like the Miss Cindy outfit by Cragstan.

There's no tag on this coat,so it could be either. It's a thin flannel,so it's probably the clone coat.

Tomorrow my friend Lori and I are going to another flea market,so maybe I'll have something else to show you from that one next week.
