Doll-A-Day #359: Chinese Sword Dance Doll

I love this doll. She's beautiful, and interesting. She's a doll representing Chinese sword dancing.

She is actually from China, as her tag shows.

She has two swords, as they are Chinese hook swords, which are used as a pair.

Wikipedia says: "The hook swordtwin hooksfu taohu tou gou (tiger head hook) or shuang gou (Chinese鈎 or 鉤pinyinGōu) is a Chinese weapon traditionally associated with northern styles of Chinese martial arts and Wushu weapons routines, but now often practiced by southern styles as well."

Click the Wikipedia link above to read the full article. There isn't much known for sure about hook swords. they may or may not have been used in the military, but probably not. They may be from this region or that.  They may be ancient, or more recent. Geez.

Her pose, with one foot in the air behind her, is one typically seen in pictures of Chinese sword dances.

She is wearing a silk outfit, with top, trousers, and skirt.

There's a lot of decoration on her clothes. I'm not sure if it's painted, or decal of some sort.

She has little black shoes with white soles.

She's about 8 or 9 inches tall, and attached to a wooden base.

I'm not sure what her hair is made of. It's twisted into two buns and decorated with sqiggly gold thread.

It has a stitched part.

She kind of reminds me of Bernadette Peters.

She has a delicate little face, with soft sculpture features.

Before I accidentally erased this whole post, (!!!), I had a link to a good site about Chinese sword dancing. Now I can't find it. It just doesn't show up when you search 'Chinese sword dance'.

Ivy and I both have some Chinese dolls with similarly made faces. In fact, this sword dance doll looks like an older version THIS GIRL of Ivy's or  THIS GIRL. of mine. .They both have the same soft sculptured faces and hair made of the same stuff...whatever that is.

359! We're nearly there! This may be the first Doll-A-Day to not miss any days at all! My sister keeps telling me I should just forget it and say, oh well. But I am so close to accomplishing what I said I was going to do, in spite of everything that happened this year. And I am going to do it!

Doll-A-Day 2023 #357: I.Q.

I posted two other Honeyhill Bunch dolls today. This is the third and last for the day. She's I.Q..

IQ is one of my favourites in the series, and I didn't even remember that I have her! I found her at the house recently.

She's one of the smaller Honeyhill Bunch dolls, at 4 inches tall.

She has her vest, but is missing her accessory, a book. The book was made of nylon cloth, and actually could be opened and had (unprinted) cloth pages. Her slogan on her box was "I always get straight A's in school."

She also still has her sunglasses, on top of her head.

I think they're the same sunglasses Mattel used for the P.J. dolls, part of the Barbie line.

I have read at least one thing that suggested I.Q. is a boy. Because she's smart and carries a book? The Honeyhill Bunch paper dolls show the boys wearing bottom clothing only, while the girls, including I.Q. wear one piece clothing with a top. The clothes provided for I.Q. have been described as  being more boyish, but really, denim pantsuits were totally worn by girls in the 70's. The other clothes included a pair of mint green footie pajamas, a sailor suit, with hat, and polka dot shirt, and a green suit, with shorts and knee socks. So you decide.

I.Q. seems to have been part of the first wave of Honeyhill Bunch dolls.

That's #358! We're getting there! Check out today's other posts for more Honeyhill Bunch dolls.

Doll-A-Day 2023 #356: Li'l Kid

  Today's doll is Li'l Kid.

Li'l Kid is a member of the Honeyhill Bunch.

The Honeyhill Bunch was a series of dolls made by Mattel from 1976 to 1978.

As you can see in the pictures above, Li'l Kid originally came with a green sleeveless top, and a dog, named 'Good'. I do have Good. When I got the doll named Hayseed, she had Good with her. You can see them both in my post HERE. Li'l Kid's slogan, from the box, was "Me 'n Good Dog wanta play too!"

Is Li'l Kid a boy or a girl? What do you think? The Honeyhill Bunch paper dolls show the girls in one piece outfits that include a top, and the boys, which include Spunky and Solo, are shown in shorts/swim trunks only. Li'l Kid is shown with no top, but wearing Mary Jane shoes, and the outfits for Li'l Kid include yellow pajamas, one outfit that looks baby boyish, (in fact, similar to Tiny Chatty Brother's clothes), one outfit with pink pants and a pink and white polka dot top and pink and white striped beanie cap, and one indistinct sailor suit. Boy or infant girl?

The Honeyhill kids, which were between 4 and 6 inches tall, all had soft, stuffed bodies, and vinyl heads.

They have Velcro on one hand so they can hold their accessory.

They all have cute little faces that remind me of the Baby Beans dolls.

Her tag is huge on such a small doll.

That's one of today's dolls. Check out today's 2 other posts for more Honeyhill Bunch.

Doll-A-Day 2023 354: Cloth Doll

Number 354 is this cute little girl.

She's only about 7 inches tall. She has a pressed cloth face, and stockingette arms and legs.

Her face looks to be hand painted. Her dress has faux straps across the chest, and real lacing.

Her sleeves and apron are a very fine cotton. She has tiny socks, with stitching detail along the tops, and felt accents.

And little felt shoes.

Her legs appear to be stitched up the fronts.

She has a beautiful face. I'm not sure what her hair is made of. It's shiny, and made into two little braids. Her felt hat frames it all nicely.

I assume those felt pieces are meant to be feathers.

I would guess her to be from the 40's. From the looks of her, she's possibly meant to be Alpine/Swiss or German. Anybody know what her costume is?

That's 354. Check out today's other posts as we try to catch up for the end of the year!

Doll-A-Day 2023 #349: An Amazing Hand Made Gift! Pee Wee Herman

Yesterday I promised that today you would see one of my Christmas gifts. Here he is. It's Pee Wee Herman.

What's so amazing about that, you say? Well the amazing thing is that my sister made this guy!

No kidding! She made him from scratch! It all started back in May, when I sent her this picture of a knitted Pee Wee doll.

I said, "Make me one.", because she can crochet. She says she doesn't knit, but whatever. My sister can do anything she tries to do, and is good at all of it. When we were kids she was always making me something. I still have most of the stuff she made for me. One thing I really wish I still had was a Barbie sized quilt sleeping bag thing that she made out of paper towels. It was a few layers of paper towels, with another layer or two masking taped around the edges, and the top layers were 'quilted' using markers. There were loads of squares, all with different pictures/decorations on them, to make it look like a quilt. It was one of my favourite things, and it disappeared over the years. Mom probably threw it away.
So, she got the idea to make me a cloth Pee Wee, because she doesn't think she can crochet that well either. That's okay. I like cloth dolls better anyway. She did it all in secret. I had no idea what she was making, although I did know the last couple of months that she was making me a Christmas present. Yes. She worked on it for months. She was constantly redoing various parts. It took her a while to find some of the fabrics. Things like that. She only finished a day or two before Christmas.
She started out by drawing the pattern.

She tried a couple of face designs.

This is how he looked when she settled on a face and got it sewn together, but hadn't stuffed the head yet.

Then she stuffed him and finished drawing his face.

She made a mock up suit or two using random fabric she had.

And finally she made the actual suit.

I think she did a pretty great job on the whole thing. I would have been scared to death to draw and colour the face on after I had worked so hard putting the whole thing together. If you screw it up at that point, all that hard work was for nothing. But I guess the head at least has to be stuffed when you paint it to know where everything is going to lay when it's stuffed.

The suit fabric is perfect. She said she thought she was going to have to juts make it grey. At the last minute she walked into a Goodwill and spotted a pair of Levi's ladies capri pants. They were exactly what she needed.

She apologized for his bow tie 'only' being 'a clip on'.

She says the metal part is from an earring.

She sewed him a white shirt, and found some tiny buttons.

She used the corners of a real handkerchief  to make his hankie.

His shirt has snaps. The buttons are just for show.

As they do with Ken doll clothes, his shirt is sleeveless, to make his coat slide on easier and the sleeves look less bulky.

  She even lined his coat!

And she bothered to put vents in his shirt!

His pants have a real fly, that closes with a snap.

Like the jacket fabric, she said she had no idea what she was going to make his shoes out of, when at the last minute she found the perfect thing. She thought she was going to have to make them out of felt.

She even made the little tassels!

She had to make him some socks from some cut down baby doll socks.

His hands have sewn in flingers.

He also has stitched in jointing. He's jointed at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and knees. He can sit down.

He can bend at the wrists.

His elbows bend.

You can see the jointing below.

Gee. Pee Wee is more buff than you would think.

Pretty cool, huh? But she didn't stop there. Actually, she gave me two packages, and the one she gave me fist contained this:

Nice, I thought. Maybe Mr. World can wear the pajamas. I don't really see him in the pink robe though. And I'll have to find somebody else to wear the cute bunny slippers. They were my favourite part though!
Then she had me open Pee Wee and all was explained.

She said she tried to find fabric with wienie dogs on it, like his pajamas, but she had to settle for dogs in general.    I didn't remember the wienie dog pajamas.

Apparently it was from an episode of the Playhouse, where Pee Wee has a pajama party.

Notice the red piping on the collar and cuffs.

The robe has blanket stitching around the collar and pockets.

She wasn't satisfied with the size of the print, but the colours are right.

She also included a little gingerbread man on her gift tag. She said she was originally intending to put it in his pocket, so I did.

He looks so warm and cozy.

The bunny slippers are great. On the show he wore slippers that looked like houses, but he wore bunny slippers in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure".

As hard as bunny slippers were, the houses might have been even harder.

Pee Wee is 16 inches tall. To give you an idea of scale, here he is having a pajama party with Tammy World.

I think she did an amazing on on him, and I appreciate it so much. I think she thinks I don't think much of him, but I do. And everybody else thought he was really something too.

Catch up starts tomorrow, so be prepared to be bombarded with posts. I didn't want to do more than one post today, because I didn't want Pee Wee to get lost in the shuffle. He's too special for that.
