Doll-A-Day 2019 #95: Baitz Whistler

    Today's doll is this lady.

She's a Baitz Whistler.

These dolls, made by Baitz, are called Whistlers for an obvious reason.

Baitz dolls were made in Austria.

The company went out of business in 1999.

There were many Baitz dolls made, most in historically accurate traditional regional costumes from different regions of Germany, Austria,Switzerland,Iceland,Sweden,Liechtenstein, and The Netherlands. The company also made some storybook characters.

This particular doll represents the traditional attire and hairstyle from the Baden-Wurttemberg region of Germany, home to The Black Forest. (That 'Wurttemberg' should have those two little dots above the letter u,but my lap top keyboard doesn't contain those.)

The Baitz dolls stand about 8 1/2 inches tall. Their bodies are stuffed, and their arms are wired for posability.

Their legs aren't.

The hands are made of felt.

The clothes are pinned to the dolls with small pins.

The early Baitz dolls have composition faces, and the later dolls have plastic faces. This one seems to be composition.

The hair is mohair.

There is Flickr page that is an excellent source of information and photos of a large collection of Baitz dolls that may help you to identify your own. You can see it HERE.
I got this doll at a doll auction. It seems not many people bid on 'travel dolls' or 'souvenir dolls',and this girl was in with a batch of those. I think the people who weren't interested hadn't taken a good look at the dolls. I got about three lots of them, and amongst the dolls were several dolls similar to this one, with felt clothes and pressed felt faces,or at least what look like pressed felt faces.I'm not quite sure what they're actually made of. In any case, there were some beautiful dolls in those boxes. The most beautiful dolls were in a box nobody else bid on at all,and I got it for $5. You may have seen one of those dolls in a previous post HERE

The other gorgeous cloth doll from that box can be seen in this post HERE.

That's all for today. Catch us again tomorrow for another doll.
