Finally, What I Got at the Doll Show: Mitzi, L'il Sister, Dodi, and More

I posted Saturday's doll show pretty quickly, before it got as strung out as the last one! So here I am, finishing up on the last one, by showing you what I got.

I was trying to be good. But there were a few things I regretted not buying at this show last September. (You can see the post on that show HERE.) I intended to see if they were at this show, and maybe buy them.

The first thing I bought was a Mini Brands book. "A Christmas Carol"! Some of you may know that's one of my 'things'. I hadn't seen the Mini Brands books before, and they actually contain print! I may be picky, (Okay. I am.), but I like a miniature book to have real printing in it. It was $4, but I figured that was a lot cheaper than  buying a ball, especially when I could buy 50 of them and not find this book. Unfortunately, the book starts out as the real book, but about 3 pages in, it turns into nonsense printing. What the hey?! Why would they bother to do that? I'm pretty sure that book is public domain now, although some of the Mini Brands books that were there aren't.

When we finally got into the actual sales room, I headed for Margie Schultz's table. Last time Margie had some Basic Fun Kosmic Kiddles keychains. Kosmic Kiddles were some of my favourite toys when I was a kid, and I always wanted the little keychains. I could never find them when they first came out, and then they got very expensive on the secondary market. Margie's were loose, and not a bad price. I wished I had bought one. Well, she had sold the loose ones. All she had was a set of NRFP ones, that was $200. Oh well.

But one thing I also regretted not buying last time was a Mitzi doll she had. I decided before the show that I was going to look for that Mitzi. Well I didn't have to look As soon as I put down the Kosmic Kiddles and turned, there she was, laying on top of all the dolls in her tub, waiting for me. And she had even been marked down since last time!

As you can see, my lilacs have been blooming. They're nearly gone now.

Mitzi was a Barbie clone, made by Ideal in 1961. Some of those Barbie clones are downright scary looking. I thought this Mitzi was the prettiest one I've ever come across. I think she's beautiful.

She could use slight touch ups to her lips and eyelashes, and her cat's eye eyeliner is nearly gone. But I can do that if I decide to. That's fairly easy, especially the eyelashes. My only worry would be the cat's eye liner. I should be able to fix that too though, if I'm careful. The irony? I will paint it with a cat whisker!

She was naked when I bought her, so she threw on this outfit out of my stash of non-Barbie Barbie sized clothes. She could do with something more refined.

She's probably had a bit of a haircut, but that's okay.

Could do with a combing too.

I think she still looks great, even with all her flaws.

I love the colour of her hair. That's the colour of red hair I would have loved to have, instead of the orange stuff I got stuck with.

Moving on, I got this great tiny sweater for $2! It looks to be handmade, and it really buttons!

The sleeves are a little long for Tammy World, but otherwise it would be prefect. Maybe my sister can fix that.

I got this Made To Move doll for $2 too.

  She's like new.

Moving on around the room, I got these clothes for $1 EACH.

The Bionic Woman outfit is perfect. Our Bionic Woman could do with a nicer outfit. The blue hoodie is also perfect, but the red shirt is a bit worn, and the dress needs a shoulder repair. It looks really familiar. It's not Barbie though. Does anybody recognize it?

There was another thing I wanted last time, but didn't buy. I had been looking at a Skipper clone. She didn't have a price, so I waited to ask for one. The dealer was really busy though, so eventually I just gave up. A lot of her stuff was overpriced anyway. But I thought I'd see if she still had her this time. She did, and this time I was able to ask for a price. When the dealer said $5, I said okay.

She could do with a little cleaning, but she's pretty good. She's made by Eegee, and wearing her original outfit, so I'm pretty sure she's L'il Sister.

  Cute, isn't she?

When I was looking for her I noticed there was also an Ideal Dodi, in her original dress. On the off chance she would be cheap too I asked about her. She was also $5!

She's wearing her original dress, but it's missing the big tassel from the front.

You may have seen my Dodi's HERE. I have two, but one is blonde with a slight haircut, and the other is a redhead, but she's had a severe haircut. The Dodi I spotted at the show was a redhead, which I wanted. She kind of  seems to have lost some hair in the front, but with the style  that Dodi is supposed to have her hair in, it won't show at all!

She'll look great when I get her cleaned up and combed.

So that's what I got. Mitzi and the bottom two girls will probably get their own days if I do Doll-A-Day again. They'll have gone to the spa by then and can show their full beauty.  See you next time.

Doll-A-Day 2023 #229; Cowgirl

I know I keep telling you that I have been busy. Well I have. All will be revealed soon, but today was another busy day. I can tell you what I did today though. Today I made a very ugly cake, and mixed up the ...mix for the appetizer thingy, for Emma's  bridal shower, which is tomorrow evening. I know. That shouldn't take all day. Did I mention that I also did a load of laundry? Well, anyway, I'm dead tired,  and tomorrow I have to drive all the way to Cincinnati and back to a doll show, and then go to the bridal shower, and then go all the way to Cleveland for another doll show on Sunday. Well, I don't have to, but I want to! I am going to be very tired by Monday, when we have to do stuff at the house, and find Ken a suit for the wedding! Tuesday I am taking the day off. I am going to do nothing but ay around and watch YouTube all day. So sue me.

But since I am so tired, and didn't have a chance to photograph anything today,, (I actually have three dolls photographed, but I am going to do them three days in a row next week.), I m giving you only one photo today, of a mystery doll. I saw her at an antique mall a while back. I don't know if what she is wearing even belongs to her, but it looks like it probably does. She looks like a lesser quality fashion doll, from maybe the 70's. Let me know if you recognize her. I know she looks vaguely familiar to me.

I know it's only one picture, but that was the original idea for Doll-A-Day anyway! It just sort of spiraled out of control! Well, okay. Here's one more. Her tag said 'Barbie Cowgirl', because you know how all fashion dolls are 'Barbie' to most people the way tissues are Kleenex, and the refrigerator was always the 'Fridgidare' when I was a kid.

And anyway, I'm going to two, count 'em, TWO doll shows in the next two days, so you'll be getting a glut of doll pictures soon.

  See you tomorrow.

Doll-A-Day 2023 #101: Mary Makeup

   Today's doll is...ugh...Mary Makeup.

I'm all for the natural look and  going without make-up. I almost never wear any myself. But Mary here could use all the make-up she can get. Of course, that's her purpose, isn't it?

Mary Makeup was an 11 1/2 inch fashion doll, made by American Character between 1964 and 1967. She was described as 'The cosmetics doll'.

Must have been a bit depressing, to know that's all you meant to the world: just make-up.

She has the same head as American Character's Tressy, (You can see some of my Tressy's HERE and HERE.), but Mary has been left pale and plain, because the idea was to be able to 'make-up' Mary Makeup. Her hair was also a pretty flat shade of blonde, because it was meant to be coloured, using markers for that purpose. Of course, Glamour Misty had hair that was meant to be coloured with her hair markers, and it still managed to be a decent looking colour.

Mary didn't have anything of her own. She was supposed to use Tressy's make-up and hair colour, and wear Tressy's clothes.  She even came in the same original dress as Tressy! (Or a navy blue version.)

"Change Mary's pretty face with Tressy's make-up kit! Change Mary's hair with Tressy's hair colouring kit! Make Mary even more glamourous with Tressy's high fashion clothes!" Holy cow! Give this girl something she can call her own! And if her face is so pretty, why is she so worried about changing it? Why does she need to change it anyway?!

Tressy must have gotten pretty sick of her.

But aww. Look what good friends they are in Tressy's booklet.

Tressy was sold as a regular grow hair doll, and as a make-up and hair colour doll, like Mary. Considering that they also shared a head sculpt, (And a body, {Except for Tressy's belly button hair extension feature.}Man! Mary really didn't have anything of her own!), I don't see the point of them being two different dolls. Mary didn't even have the cool grow hair feature. I will say that the make-up Tressy isn't quite as pale and colourless as Mary.

Of course, I have to admit, these Mary's aren't that bad.

I have seen waaaayyyy uglier Mary Make-ups than these. At least these girls have a pink complexion. Most Mary's I've seen are very pale, with faces that look like the kid washed off more than just the make up.

As I said, Mary Makeup dolls generally have really colourless, washed out faces and horrifying heads of pale hair. The one in this ad has pure white hair.

Whatever it is, keep it a secret.

Palitoy made a doll called Mary Makeup in 1980. That doll wasn't anything like this one though. She was a bigger scale doll, with a prairie type dress and a pinafore.

That's the doll for today. Tomorrow is a special 'tour'!

Doll-A-Day 2023 #24: Happy My Girl

Today's doll is one that should have appeared in the last post on our trip. I photographed it the night of that last day I posted about. She's this lady.

This doll has more names than six dolls! She's Happy. She's My Girl. She's Angel. She's Beauty Doll. I'm still not sure which name she actually goes by. Nothing comes up when you Google 'Happy My Girl Doll'. On the other hand, when you Google 'Angel Doll', you get every angel doll ever made, and none of them are her.

"The new mainstream productsbeautiful bring you feel different!" "Come quickly to collect this new product with us together!" "Every girl dreams to become a beautiful girl!"

She's obviously a Barbie knock off. She's the same size as a Barbie. She has jointed elbows and wrists, as well as the usual neck, shoulder, and hip joints. It looks like she probably has click bend knees.

Her face is fairly pretty, and her face paint isn't bad although it's pretty simple. That hair looks pretty chincy though.

I spotted this doll in a London souvenir and candy store. They had some toys, and socks, of which I partook. Socks seemed to be my biggest souvenir purchases during the trip! I got quite a lot of socks. Well, at least socks are useful.

I also spotted this display in a real estate office window. I'm sorry. It was England. It's an estate agent.

It says 'homeowners', but the bottom floor looks like a dance club, the middle floor is a bar, and I'm not sure what the top floor is. Is that a billiard table or a piano? There is the word 'arcade' on the wall to the right. So, not a piano I guess.

This was quite a big dollhouse too. It must have been more than 3 feet tall, maybe 4.

That's the doll for today. Unless Ken manages to find my spare camera battery charger today, I'm reduced to using my phone for pictures after this. I know people do that, but I hate it. I have a much easier time with my camera. In any case, see you tomorrow for another doll.

Doll-A-Day 2019 #24: Disco Wanda (formerly Mystery Lady)

Well, Lori's ablation was postponed due to another emergency the doctor had. So hang onto those prayers, good wishes, happy thoughts, and positive vines for a later date.
Today's pictures were taken yesterday while the temperature was a much-warmer-than-it-has-been-lately 44 degrees Fahrenheit, and the snow was melting and dripping everywhere. There were splashes coming off everything, and some fine rain spitting,so the doll kept getting water specks on her face. Several times my camera lens fogged up. (It actually made for some nice pictures.) I swear there were still a few snow flakes settling too. There's no way it could be melting and snowing at the same time, but this is Ohio, The weather has a mind of it's own.
Update to this post: A kind reader has informed me that this lady is Disco Wanda, made by Shindana in 1978. Debbie at Black Doll Collecting has done a good post on the Disco Wanda dolls, with  pictures of different Disco Wanda,(and Disco Juanita) dolls, and even an ad or two. you can see that post HERE.

She's obviously meant to be a Barbie competitor, but who is she?

She's the same size as Barbie, with similar hands and high heel feet.

She also has click bend type legs, minus the sound, and with only one bend.
She has an interesting face, with a big, open mouthed smile.

She can look a little over enthusiastic from some angles, but I like her. She looks happy and friendly.

Her head is on a ball joint, so she can tilt her head.

Water specks everywhere!
Her hair is quite long.

I'm sure it had better curl when she was new.

Her twist waist allows her to turn.

Her body is shattered where the waist joins,so she's having trouble keeping things together.

She's wearing a Mommy made winter coat with a sheepskin collar,(ew!).

She's marked only 'Hong Kong' on her upper back. I got her in a load of auction stuff a while back. When I got her she was wearing a homemade dress,so that didn't help with identification either.

Thanks to Andrea Wilson for the information on Wanda!
See you tomorrow for another doll.

Doll-A-Day 2017 #239: Hong Kong Barbie Clone and This Week's Yard Sale Stuff

The troll I showed you yesterday was part of Friday's yard sale haul. Here's the stuff that's of interest:

Monsters Inc light up Sulley,a Liv doll,a Barbie clone,Raggedy Ann box,Wizard of Oz album,Vintage Christmas ornaments, an Enesco lady, yesterday's troll,a tiny tubular fellow,a Bitty Baby, and a farm house.
This little guy is cute. He definitely doesn't pass today's criteria for non-choking hazard toys though. Does anybody recognize him?

I thought I'd done well, getting this Bitty Baby for $1.

She has a nice face and good hair, her body is clean. The only thing is, she has a chewed hand, which is bad, and a damaged foot, which isn't quite as obvious.
This is a really pretty Liv doll, fully dressed and with her wig.

She has purpley eye shadow, which I didn't have on the other Livs I 've found in these clothes.

The little house is from a New Ray Deluxe Farm Playset.

It doesn't have a floor in the upstairs area, and none of the doors open.Cute though.I paid 75 cents, and one sold online as a G scale house for model railroads, for $35!
The box is a Knickerbocker Raggedy Ann box from 1964.

Today's doll is the Barbie clone.

She's 11 1/2" tall, like a real Barbie. I would bet this is her original bathing suit.
She's marked only Made in Hong Kong. She looks very much like the Cragstan Fashion Model doll.

She has the style of eye make up similar to the original Barbie faces...

...but she has long, straight hair with bangs, like the later Mod Era Barbies.

She's made of a cheap.thin, hollow plastic, with simple joints. Her head is on a ball joint though,so it can tilt.

You may have seen my past posts on Barbie clone dolls. If not you can see them HERE,HERE, and HERE.
Tomorrow is another doll. See you then.
