Happy Easter! Some Not Fun Stuff, Plus I Got What I Wanted!

Happy Easter to those who celebrate it. I am fairly subdued this Easter season. I have been having some weird heart dances, higher blood pressure than I normally have, and have gotten over some swooney spells I was having a couple of months ago. They were pretty bad. My doctor ordered an ultrasound of my carotid artery, an echocardiogram, and a CT scan of my head. The insurance refused the CT scan, claiming my doctor said I had a problem with my nerves, and that wouldn't call for a CT scan. Apart from the fact that my doctor never said that, I still think it's terrible that an insurance company that has never seen me, gets to decide what I need medically, over my actual doctor who HAS seen me. My doctor was able to resubmit the request and it has been rescheduled. In the meantime, my heart continues to dance and my swooney spells have gone away. But a few days ago, I suddenly found a huge lump on the side of my leg, just below my knee. It was black too, like a giant bruise. The only thing was, I hadn't actually done anything to my leg to cause it. My hypochondriac mind immediately jumped to 'blood clot', and I ran for the emergency room.

Where I spent the next few hours.

I was assured the lump couldn't possibly be a clot, due to it's position. (Blood clots occur in the back of the legs, apparently.) They were going to send me home, but when asked if I had any other complaints, I said my chest felt tight. Then they wouldn't let me go home. They tested my everything, including bloodwork, different bloodwork to check for a heart attack, an x-ray of my heart, echocardiogram, blood oxygen, pulse, etc.  As usual, everything came back perfect. My blood pressure was a little high, but the doctor said they expect that in the ER. I also figured it could have been my nerves because I was afraid. So now I have a follow up appointment with my doctor, and I still have that appointment to get my head examined. (Ha.)

I think the root of the whole thing is the lack of sleep I've had since Ken had his strokes last July. Since then I have slept through the night twice I think. Since the stroke affected Ken's left leg, arm, and hand, he needs help with his toileting, and since he also had kidney damage, he pees a lot. Sometimes it has been once an hour, or sometimes every two hours, all night and day. There have been days when I am completely exhausted and can hardly stay awake. He's improving though, (He was in the hospital again a couple of weeks ago with another UTI. Fortunately this one was less serious than last time, and he was only in for a couple of days. Thankfully, since I only had a very uncomfortable chair to sleep in this time. It was like torture.) He has been given something to help him more completely empty his bladder when he goes, which is supposed to help prevent UTIs.), and I have slept more lately. I'm hoping that will help. The ER doc said stress and lack of sleep could definitely be the cause of my heart flutters and blood pressure problems. I've had stress flutters before, three other times. Once was when my dad was living with us, when he had dementia. I had to go to the cardiologist, and he verified that it was just stress because nothing even showed up on my overnight monitor.

This Easter is weird for me, because I'm not making Easter baskets for my kids. Even though they've been grown for a while, I still made their baskets up. But Ivy lives in another state now, and Emma lives in another town. We're also living on a limited income now, which makes money a bit tighter. I also added to our debt recently. I was taking Ken to his appointment at the heart failure clinic. It's a multilane one way street. As I got almost up to the turn in to the parking lot, I put my turn signal on, checked there was nothing in the left lane, and started, very slowly, to ease into the left lane.  I had barely gotten the edge of my front fender into the lane when a huge red Jeep vehicle came speeding up in the left lane and whammed into us. I stopped, but the red Jeep continued on, and bounced all over the street, and slid sideways. It ended up crossways in the left lane, ahead of me. I was still in the right lane. The guy immediately jumped out of his vehicle and got on his phone to the police. I had to get Ken inside, to his appointment, because he had been having very low blood pressure. He couldn't miss it. To cut a long story short, I was, of course, cited, because I was entering his lane. However, he is claiming that I hit him, when he is the one who hit me. The only damage to his vehicle is a scubbed passenger side front tire, and a scratched streak along under his passenger side door. That's how high his vehicle was compared to mine. Our car, on the other hand, has a crunched front fender. I had a hard time getting my door open after the crash, and the fender was rubbing the tire so bad, that I had to stop at the garage on the way home and have them pull it out so I could drive the car. The rim of my wheel is bent up, and my tie rod or something is bent. So I get a ticket and an insurance deductible. They'll probably drop us because we used them.

Anyway, on to the stuff that interests you more. As you might recall, I had my eye on the Mini Verse Make It Mini Spring set, with the deviled eggs. I manage to scoop up a lot of the Mini Brands sets free by getting the empty cases with the sample toys on them from the stores. But the only Spring display I saw was a huge one, about 4 feet tall, and attached to an endcap.

Ken, looking suspicious by the Spring display.

Recently Fuzz and I went to the only store I had even seen that display in, and it was GONE! Gone, and probably just thrown in the trash. That was the only store in town that even had the Spring series. I was disappointed. But then we walked around to the other end of the aisle, where the clearanced toys are, and there was ONE Spring ball! I wondered if it was actually clearanced though, because it didn't have a clearance sticker on it. Fuzz suggested taking it to find out. I agreed to that, and we continued our shopping. I had something else to do before going home, and I had to get back to Ken. So we finished our individual shopping and went through the checkouts. I totally forgot about the ball, because I was tired and in a hurry. When we got out, Fuzz handed me the ball. He bought it for me. I asked if it had been clearanced, and he had no idea. We had to look at the receipt. It was not. They must just have only had one left and had just tossed it on the clearance shelf to get rid of the display. (Sniff!) I told Fuzz he could consider it my Mothers Day gift.

So I took the ball home, anxious to see which set I had gotten. I mean, there are four sets. What are the odds I would get the deviled egg one? I was hoping, but how good is my luck? Well, I could see this showing through the ball. Looks like a good sign!

  Oh yeah!

Things were almost certain at this point! I mean, the package has the deviled eggs pictured on it! This must be the one!

And it is! What were the odds of that?!

The set comes with a two piece table, tongs, a bowl to mix the 'eggs' in, and a spoon to mix it with, a chicken shaped tray for the prepared eggs, a container of already halved boiled eggs...

...a jar of  'mayonaise',(The resin for holding everything together. Of course, you never get the resin in the sample toys on the boxes.), a jar of  'peppercorns' to use for eyes on the eggs...

and a container of little orange things to use as beaks. (Carrot pieces maybe?) Cheese?

There's also a little bunny head that clips on to something. I'm not sure what you're supposed to clip it to though.

The directions aren't the clearest. Kids are going to understand this? And why do they start at the bottom of the paper and go upward? I read from top to bottom. Or am I just old fashioned?

One thing that's a cool little detail is, the eggs themselves have two different textures. The whites are sort of rubbery feeling, and the yolks are rough.

I'm going to have to use some tweezers to put the little faces on. Those tiny tongs are never going to work with my fat fingers. I'm not sure I want to do all of them. It would be nice to have some plain ones too. Tammy World thinks they taste fine just the way they are.

She's wondering if you remember her Easter dress I made for her a few years ago. She did quite a photo shoot in it, which you can see by clicking on the highlighted link.

I'm making curried eggs today, which I have been doing for Easter for years. We're also having sauteed Hosta shoots from our yard. (Well, the shoots are. They didn't come out of the yard sauteed though...) We haven't had any the last two or three years, due to 'circumstances'. (i.e. house fire, living at Emma's, etc.) We used to do it though. We had a batch yesterday, and they were pretty good. There's been quite a crop this year. And yes, I mean Hostas, those plants with big leaves that flower and grow in your yard. They are quite edible. In fact, they were originally for eating, and only became strictly decorative when they came over here. They can be cut at four or five inches tall, up to two or three times, and will still grow back and flower in that season. Anyway, have a good day. I'll see you again soon.

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter, Passover, Ramadan, or whatever else you celebrate! We celebrate Easter in our family, and Ken and I will be having dinner with Emma and AJ tonight, and seeing Fuzzy tomorrow. Unfortunately Ivy couldn't come home for Easter because her friend is shooting her thesis film today, and Ivy promised to help. But we saw her a few weeks ago. Doesn't make it better though!

Tammy World with a tiny doll Ivy made me when she was a kid, and a Boyd's duck.

  Have a great day!

A Happy Easter with an Old Cottage Doll

Happy Easter and Passover to everyone. I thought I'd share some cheery Spring pictures of the doll Ken gave me for Easter today.

She's an Old Cottage doll.  I've been wanting one for a while, but they can be expensive. I found this girl online recently for a good price though, and Ken bought her for me without my knowing.

Old Cottage dolls were made in England.

The company was started in 1948 by Margaret Fleischmann.

Margaret was originally from Czechoslovakia, but moved to England in 1939.

Margaret began by making dolls for her daughter Susi, who later helped her run the company.

The faces of Old Cottage dolls are hard composition or hard plastic. As you can see, my girl has some cracks in her face.

The dolls were available in a couple of sizes. This girl is about 9 inches tall. The bodies are padded wire, covered with felt.

I didn't know until I got this girl, that she can move her head side to side, and her arms and legs are jointed too.

The hair is mohair.

This doll does have some moth damage to her felt limbs too. The felt must be made of wool. It was in those days. Now the felt available in places like JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby is acrylic.

Her dress, which is made of a crepe like fabric, even has matching bloomers.

Her dress is removable and closes in the back with hook and eye closures.

In the 60's the BBC comissioned Old Cottage Dolls to make a set of Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee dolls. The dolls were also available to the public. I'd love to have a set of those!

Some Busy Work,Some Freezing Cold Gardening, and a Patience Photo Story

It has been SO COLD the last couple of days. Yesterday it was about 42 Fahrenheit! (Today was not much better,at 43.) I got a lot accomplished yesterday though. Some of the plastic drawer units I keep my fabric in were getting squashed from the weight of being stacked. Ken helped me lift them and I did some rearranging so they could sit without being stacked on top of each other. Then I was able to resort my fabric drawers. That took AGES. I had them separated by pattern,(stars, polka dots, stripes, animals, flowers, fruits, period specific patterns, etc.) They had gotten a bit mixed up because I couldn't get some of the drawers open because they were squashed, so I was just sticking fabric in whichever drawers I could get open.
In spite of the cold,I also harvested some of my leeks yesterday. I planted them years ago. They come back every year, but never get big enough to eat,and then start blooming. You may have seen the blooming leeks, (No pun intended, although they are really annoying...) on the blog. For instance,in some of the pictures of the mini Pippi I made for a Flickr friend.

You can see her whole post HERE.

This year they are getting almost big enough to eat! I harvested a couple of young leeks that were a pretty decent size, and, accidentally, a tiny one. Ken and I both had a serving's worth last night though. Leeks are a veg that grows better in the cooler weather,so I think our really cool Spring has been just what they've been wanting.
I also cut a few of the Hostas. Some of them were about 6 inches tall, and some weren't even that tall, but were starting to unfurl any way. It was enough for a nice little batch of them.
On Easter I took some other pictures besides the ones of Tammy World. Doing Doll-A-Day has meant I rarely get to show you a doll more than once. Because I'm not doing it this year gives me a chance to 'play' with some dolls I haven't gotten to for a while. One of the dolls I have been looking forward to getting to do some pictures with again  is Patience. You can see her original post HERE. She posed for some pictures with a little ceramic bunny I have. I had no story in mind when I took the pictures, but as I was posting the photos on Flickr, a story just wrote itself. So here is my little story. Patience's dress is from an old 12 inch Effanbee doll, if I'm recalling correctly.
                                               Patience's Easter Adventure
Patience went for a walk in the woods to pick some flowers...

It was very quiet in the woods.

A quiet rustle in the undergrowth caught her attention.

She couldn't tell where it was coming from.

"Ah."thought Patience,"I think it's coming from over there.Hello!" she called softly.

She saw a furry little creature hiding under the leaves. She decided to sit down and pretend not to notice, in hopes that the shy animal would come forward.

Eventually, she saw him,out of the corner of her eye.

"Hello." said Patience,"Who are you?" The little rabbit's nose twitched. "You may call me Pinky." he said,"How do you do?" "I'm very well thank you." said Patience,"You may call me Patience."

Pinky and Patience picked flowers all afternoon. Pinky ate them all, but Patience didn't mind. She was glad to have made a new friend.

As the sun began to fade Patience bid Pinky goodbye, promising to come visit him again soon. "And I will come to visit you in your garden." said Pinky.

"Hmm...yes,well,maybe I should visit you." said Patience, remembering the flowers. "Very well." said Pinky,"I'll see you soon!"

And I'll see you again soon.

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter! (for those of you who celebrate it.) We had a nice socially distanced day. We had lunch on the patio with Emma and AJ. We were outside and able to keep something of a distance, and still getting to see them. It was a bit drizzly while they were here, but not enough to deter us. After they left, the weather, typically, went sunny!
Last night I stayed up VERY late making curried potatoes, for Emma. (Emma gave up eating eggs as eggs many years ago. It just bothered her. She gave eggs up completely for a couple of years, which is very tough. The world isn't built around vegans, or even near vegans like Emma was. She eats eggs in things now, but still can't bear to eat actual eggs.) I also made curried eggs from the cage free eggs for Ivy, and made curried eggs with the whatever eggs for Fuzz and Ken, who will eat most anything. In case you're wondering, I can't eat curried anything any more, but those eggs are delicious!
I also spent most of the day working on finishing up Tammy World's new Easter dress. I found the fabric a few weeks ago, before quarantine started, when I was out doing my early Easter shopping. I thought it was cute, and would make a good Easter dress for Tammy.  I don't really sew, and I can't use a pattern. My method is pretty much 'sew it on the subject'. (This was quite a point of irritation for the kids when I made their Halloween costumes!) I sort of hold fabric up to the subject and cut it to fit and sew it, sometimes on the subject's body.
I got the dress made all but finishing sewing and attaching the sleeves. I was having such a hard time, because sleeves are the part I still haven't managed to tackle in most cases. I had thought about having Tammy wear the little gray sweater from a Lori fashions pack anyway, and it was really late, and I did have to finish all those eggs... So, even though Ivy had chided me about not finishing the sleeves the day before, I was pretty much resigned to leaving the sleeves unfinished and covering it up with the sweater. That's when Ivy came downstairs and looked at my work. She asked me if I was going to finish, and offered to sew the sleeves on for me. I took her up on the offer.
So here's Tammy in her new Easter dress.

It's printed with ducks and chicks and geese better scurry...Oh. Sorry! It's printed with ducks and chicks and Easter eggs!

The sunshine lasted just long enough for me to take loads of photos. Then it went drab again.

With her favourite gift, a giant 'chocolate' bunny, and Fuzzy the Doll's Easter basket because I didn't want to dig hers out!
The dress without the sweater.
And with.
Tammy enjoyed a visit with the Easter Bunny.

In fact, they became quite good friends.

The part of the Easter Bunny was played by the bunny that came with a 2001 Madame Alexander doll called 'Easter Hop'.

She really liked that 'chocolate' bunny, which is not really chocolate. I'm not sure what it's made of.

I had some very tiny lace I bought at a miniature show that I used for her collar.

I wanted some nice anklets for her. I may have to make her some. That wasn't happening by Easter though!

I would have liked to have cuffs on her sleeves too, but let's not go crazy here!

This is pretty much the same picture, but the print of the dress comes out better in the one below.

Tammy got tired of taking pictures. Her feet started hurting.

I hope everybody had a nice day!
