Thrift Store Finds Part 4: Davey and Goliath Puppets

It's been awhile, but I still have more finds from that one week of thrift store hauls a couple of weeks ago. Today I'm showing you these puppets. Anybody remember Davey and Goliath?
These guys are full sized hand puppets. They were 49 cents each at Salvation Army.I found Davey one day, and Goliath several days later!

Davey and Goliath was a children's tv show created by Gumby creator Art Clokey.
"We thought we were the only ones!"
The series used the same 'stop motion' animation as the Gumby series, and shows like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. The characters were made of foam over a poseable armature. The eyes and mouths were made of paper so their expressions could be easily changed.
It began airing in 1960 and new episodes were made until 1965. It was later brought back and more new episodes were made. I watched it as a kid in the 60's.

Ken volunteered his arms...ok, I asked him. He's not much of a puppeteer.

Goliath was Davey's dog. His catch phrase, (Yes, he talked.), was "People never listen."
Davey's friends Nat, (from the 60's shows I watched as a kid.) and Jonathan Reed, (from the later 70's shows), were some of the first African American characters to appear as friends of a white lead character.
The series was made by The Lutheran Church.

While Davey's faith in God was a part of his life, the show was praised for never being 'preachy'. The lessons taught were about respect, tolerance, right and wrong, and manners: lessons everyone needs to learn, regardless of religious preference.
Davey and Goliath episodes can be bought on iTunes. There is also an official Davey and Goliath website. You can go there HERE.

Thrft Store Finds Part 3: Madeline Case and Miss Clavel

If you have been reading the last few days you'll know I made quite a thrift store haul about a week ago. I showed you the Woodseys and Strawberry Shortcake dolls. Today, in part 3, I'm showing you this Madeline Doll Case and the goodies inside, which I got at Goodwill for only $2.00.

The case is made to look like the 'old house in Paris'. The front shows Madeline and friends looking out the windows.

The case is from 1999, and was made for the 8" Eden Madeline dolls.
The back shows Madeline's friend Pepito upstairs, and more girls in the downstairs window and hiding behind a tree.

There's Miss Clavel in the downstairs side window. That latch is REALLY sturdy.

Miss Clavel was inside the case. The ribbons on the right are for storing two dolls. When the case is opened there is a little table printed on the left. It's a flap, which opens, and on the other side...

...is a vanity.

In addition to Miss Clavel there were several items of clothing and a couple of hangers stuffed in the two storage drawers. The yellow smock and blue beret are from a Madeline artists outfit.

There is supposed to be a bar on the left for hanging clothes, but this one is missing. It can be replaced with a  tiny wooden dowel.

There were also 5 socks, a pair of cozy slippers and matching robe,a pink and white striped shirt and bibbed overalls, a red plaid shirt,a school dress, and a yellow Madeline and friends hat.

You may have seen Tammy World wearing the same kind of red plaid shirt in my First Day of School photostory.

I love the Madeline dollhouse,(You can see mine HERE.), but the dolls never interested me much. There are some really cute clothes made for them though, and they fit the original style Barbie sister Stacey doll pretty well...
Like this Stacey given to me recently by my doll friend Connie. Thanks Connie! The overalls are a little short, but if they were rolled up they would look like they were made that way.(Or Stacey would look like she should be in the 80's band Dexy's Midnight Runners...)

Come on Eileen...

She hasn't had a trip to the hairdressers yet, Her bangs are a little matted.
They also fit the When I Read I Dream dolls like Tammy 'Fern' World. That's because those dolls were made with the Stacey body. That's what interested me. I wanted the overalls and robe and slipper set.
Miss Clavel is wearing her habit, but not her wimple.

She looks a little disheveled, but then, taking care of all those kids must be hard on the nerves.
She has quite an elaborate bun.

She wears some clod hoppers.

Maybe they aren't her shoes. They fit very loosely. They're really floppy on her feet. Is she missing some socks or tights?
Another question: Her legs seem to be molded in a bent position.

Floppy shoes.

Bent knees. I thought at first she had bendable legs and they were in the slightly bent position. They aren't bendable though.

It makes her look a little bow legged. Is she meant to be this way?
I still have more to show from that week's thrift store hauls. Keep watching...

Flea Market score!

Saturday my friend Lori and I went to the BIG flea market in Lucasville. Lori, who has been having trouble with her heart this year was definately feeling much better than the last flea market we went to.Thank goodness.I've been very worried about her. It was so good to see her pretty much back to her old self.
I did get a few goodies...

Ho Ho Ho! Is it December yet? The Santa is not the usual 12" guy. He's way smaller. I notice he's keeping an eye on those deer.

A strange frog baby and his friend  in the Barbie Babysits basket. The dresser I actually got last. I only had 75 cents by then, so I had to borrow a dollar from Lori. The guy had $2 on it and I asked him if he would take $1.75. He laughed when I showed him my last 75 cents and how I was getting the dollar from Lori, and said ok! It's a picture frame, but I'm going to replace the glass with a mirror. It'll be the perfect doll dresser! I might replace the drawer knobs too.

...including some really cheap stuff for our turtle, our cats, and our bird, probably the last home grown tomatoes of the season : ( and some great Amish peanut butter cookies.) But as we were trying to work our way toward the exit I came across what I will describe as  'Toy Island': a whole corner of one row filled with dolls and toys. They covered the ground and several tables. If I hadn't spent most of my money by then I could have bought alot more from the lady running the stall. As it was I passed up a large non talking Family Matters Steve Urkel doll, (I have the talking one, but I've never seen this one.),a 12" modern Holly Hobbie doll, an 18" Fancy Nancy with all her original outfit including jelly sandals, and several others. I had started by rummaging through the tub of $3 Barbie sized dolls and the tub full of Bratz Kidz, Strawberry Shortcake, etc. I had already picked out  a Twilight Edward doll.

Bella digs scrawny pale guys.

Too bad his vinyl is the weirdly white colour. (He's pretty pale even for an English guy.)I really like the body sculpt. It's very realistic.I also had the Steve Urkel ,and the Holly Hobbie. But then I spotted two bags of  old dolls. The dolls were $1 each. "They're old." the lady said.I started going through the bags and spotted some vintage trolls...

...this Uneeda Little Miss Revlon Wanna Be.She has strange hair: two types and two shades of red, but all original.

After that trip to the spa and the laundry I feel so much better.

...this Uneeda Ginny Wanna Be  Girl Scout walker doll.

Anybody ever tell this girl about sock garters?

...this purse doll...doll purse?

...and this girl.

But the find of the day was something that made me gasp a bit when I saw her in the bag under the other dolls.

AHHH!!!

This beautiful little 8" Betsy McCall! She has blushy cheeks, both her barrettes, and she's wearing actual Betsy PJ's from 'Pajama Party'.

Ok Betsy. You can open your eyes now. You're in your new home.

Hmm?

Well Betsy, what do you think?

I guess she likes it here. Betsy does the happy dance over her new home.

Is this my dresser? Uh...we'll see....

She's perfect. All her joints are tight, her colouring is bright. her hair is full. No cracks or splits. And she was only a dollar!I was so excited! Lori is not a doll person at all and could not appreciate what a great find Betsy was. All she could say was, "Who would pay more than that anyway?" Happily, my doll friend Connie was duly impressed when I told her yesterday!
One thing though. I can't seem to get her to sit down? Any advice?
In the end I had to put Holly Hobbie and Steve Urkel back.(Oh well. I prefer the cool plastic saddle shoes on talking Steve anyway.) But I got a great Betsy with blushy cheeks, which I really wanted. You win some you lose some.I think I came out on top!

Fantastic finds of the week!

What was that I said a few posts back about not being able to top the Larry the Lion find the rest of the summer? Well, this may not top Larry, since he was a life long yearning, but it's pretty good!Get comfortable. This may take a while!
I went yard saling Friday and found some nice dolls.

I'd been wanting a Flynn from "Tangled". I don't like this Rapunzel as much as the other two I have, but I didn't want to break up a couple! Two more Moxie Girls, and they both have feet!I have also wanted the new Stacie and Skipper, but I didn't want to pay store prices. These two have all their original clothes too, which was great. And yes, that's a like new Twilight Jacob in his original stuff. He'll either help pay for the stuff I'm keeping, or he'll don a shirt and be somebody else.A My Scene guy, fully clothed and with shoes! The guys from Mulan and Pocahantas:you never come across them. And two Monster High girls in their original stuff too. If anybody knows who the short doll in the blue and white dress is, let me know. She's marked 2001 Mattel.

These came from three different places in groups of 10,2, and 5.I think my total was $17.00, but I got some other stuff in with them. I also got these cute girls for a dollar a piece. They need some rehabilitation, but I couldn't resist rescuing them.Their bodies are oil cloth, I think.

I think they look like the old actress Nanette Fabray.

On Saturday I was heading to a big 'community sale' at a housing development just outside of town. On the way I stopped at some sales that were being held on the grounds of the high school and found this.

I REALLY wanted one of these, but they are so expensive. The guy selling it cut it down from $15 to $10 for me,so I let myself have it! It's 1/6 scale.(And cast iron and weighs a ton!) It's missing one lid, but it has the coal shovel, and the thing to lift the lids with, as well as a skillet, a pan,and the coal scuttle.
From there I went on to the community sales.I got some doll stuff, a CD, and some other things. I was there for two or three hours and decided to head for home. But the real find of the weekend still awaited me.I went home by a route I don't normally take. I don't know why. I was on the far end of the street I actually live on when I passed a yard sale with what I though were Miss Revlon feet sticking up out of a box. I whipped into a parking space and went to check it out. When I walked up to the sale I forgot all about Miss Revlon. There spread out before me were four old doll cases, filled with clothes and dolls. One of the first things I spotted was a pink skinned Ricky doll. I wanted a pink skinned Ricky and Ken (My husband Ken, not the doll.)bought me one online a few years ago. He was affordable because he has a barely noticeable nose nip. This guy was nice, and no nose nip. The guy running the sale said he would take "$100 for all the doll stuff." I neither had $100, nor wanted to pay that much. The dolls were mildewy and dirty and might not clean up very well. There was a nasty faced Midge wearing the Floating Gardens dress though, and the cape was in one of the cases. I thought if I could get the stuff for a reasonable price I could sell the Floating Gardens so I could afford to keep what I wanted. After some haggling I got some of the stuff for $40 and went home. After fortifying myself with a soy 'chicken' sandwich and rounding up the troops, we went out for ice cream. The guy still had his sale on so I stopped back and offered him "the grand total of everything I have left in my purse", which was $16. He insisted he had to have at least $25, so I said ok and left. Before I could get back to my van he called me back and relented. So here is what I got for my $56.Those of you who are offended by non-anatomically correct naked plastic, beware...

A Barbie only body, Skipper and a spare body, the Miss Barbie swing canopy, clothes, and Allan, in desperate need of medical attention for those arms. At least they were both there!
Ricky, TNT Barbie (wearing the Suzy Goose rug as a dress,Midge in Floating Gardens, Senior Prom,Trailblazers,Pak clothing,Francie's Fresh as a Daisy,FQ wig, and more!
Some paper dolls, including Scooter and...Jane? How did she get in there? (I wanted one though, and she even has her shoes.)
Some of the same, plus Francie, her Concert in the Park dress and hat and It's a Date dress,a bubble cut, Fashion Queen head and a wig, and the unfortunate legless girl. Unlike Allan's arms, her legs were nowhere to be found.

A suspicious looking Allan (Maybe she ripped his arms off...)with the girl who started it all. She turned out to be a nobody.
Tiny Thumbelina (with knob--and she works!), her original dress, slip, and one bootie, her pink corduroy outfit with hat,Chatty Cathy's flannel PJ's and blue dress with over blouse and crinoline, plus more clothes and a couple of Pee Wees.If anybody can identify any of the other clothes, I'd love to hear from you.

More Barbie clothes, a Tressy dress, the Suzy Goose vanity, and a very nasty Tammy doll in Barbie's Pak playsuit. (And yes, I had a Tammy as a kid. For some reason my mom threw her away when I was very small. I still have her gym suit and shoes though.)
Poor Tammy.
Luckily, they cleaned up pretty well. Here they are after their initial trip to the Tam Spa.

Turns out Tammy has lovely strawberry blonde hair and a high colour face. Midge and Francie will need eyebrows, but I can do that. Francie's had a haircut, but it kind of looks like an American Girl Barbie cut. Twist and Turn looks pretty good. Allan's arms went back on (and in the case of the one, out) easily after putting him in very hot water. They aren't even swingy.
Beautiful Ricky!

And Midge looks pretty good in Senior Prom.Actually, I'm going to put it on a red haired Midge, but shh. Don't tell her...
Here's what she looked like before. She looks like she's been in a fight.(Maybe that's what happened to Allan's arms...)
The cases were a couple of generic cases,a common blue Skipper case, and the Barbie case with Sophisticated Lady on the lid.
So the moral of the story is,don't overlook mangy looking dolls. Sometimes they can clean up to be beautiful. I'm pretty tickled with these guys. My family is unimpressed, especially Ken, who can't get over that I spent $56.
Oh, I forgot. On Friday I got this girl. She doesn't have any markings.Does anybody know who she is?

She needs her arms restrung, but she has teeth!Aww!

Ok, that's it. I've done my happy rant. Thanks for listening.
