Doll-A-Day 254: Ricky

  Today's doll is Ricky.

He's not the same Ricky we saw recently. He's the new guy I got at Salvation Army Friday evening.

He's a tan skinned Ricky. The Ricky I showed recently, on Doll-A-Day 215, is a pink skinned Ricky.

 
He actually has a slightly lighter red hair than his pink buddy.

 And, of course, they both have freckles.

They have a molded cowlick in their hair.

 Ricky was introduced in 1965 as a tan skinned doll. The pink skinned version followed the next year.

 Ricky shares the Skipper body mold with Skipper and Skooter.

This Ricky is wearing his original outfit: swim trunks and a beach jacket.

Don't let the greenery fool you. It was pretty cold out there today for this outfit!

He's supposed to have cork sandals with red straps, identical to Ken's original sandals. This guy doesn't have his, but his beach jacket and swim trunks are really nice.

 Ricky is the only Skipper friend to ever have his own line of clothing. Six outfits were produced for Ricky. His beach jacket has a Ricky tag inside the collar.

Doll-A-Day 253: Skipper Saturday: Brunette Straight Leg Skipper

  Today's Skipper Saturday doll is a new acquisition. I just bought her last night at Salvation Army. She's a brunette straight leg.

A tip from a doll dealer who lives here in town, (I ran into her at Goodwill.), led me to Salvation Army. They had a Tutti case with three dolls and non Tutti clothes, a Ken case with a Ken, Allan, and a bunch of Barbie clothes, and a Skipper/Skooter case with a Ricky, this Skipper, and some Skipper clothes and shoes.

 The Ricky is super nice and looks barely played with. We'll see more of him tomorrow.

Skipper is in very good condition too. She might have had a chunk of her bangs cut, or she may have just been rooted that way.

She's in nice condition otherwise though.

She has the 'tan' skin tone'. She's a lot less pink than my tan skinned Sample Skipper that I showed you last Saturday. Even though she's tan skinned she has a very pink complexion compared to today's girl.

Sample on the left, new girl on the right. New girl has a slight paint flaw in her right eye. I haven't had a chance to do any clean up on her other than a quick rub on her face to remove some white powdery looking stuff. I forgot it was there. Sorry!

This Skipper is wearing Platter Party from 1965.

'Platter' refers to records, for those of you too young to know the usage.

Platter Party consists of the dress,red flats, a blue plastic record player,and 2 'records', one with a blue label and one with a red label. 

The blue record player was something I wanted because it reminds me of a record player I had when I was a kid.It was light and dark blue too, and made of really hard plastic. It had been my Dad's, I think.It ran on batteries. I took it to school in first grade and played my few records on the bus and at school during indoor recess. I wish I still had it.
  Unfortunately, even though I have two of the Skipper ones, I can't lay my hands on one of them right now! But it looks like this:

  As warm as it has been recently, today it was in the 40's! It rained all day yesterday and on and off today.That really helped cool it down. Ken and I did some yard saling this morning, and while we were out it began to snow, and then, suddenly, to hail! Ken was in shorts and a short sleeved shirt. Everybody was questioning it, as was I. Ken always tries to claim that he's not cold, even though I was freezing. Eventually he admitted that it was 'starting to get cold'! He even put socks on when he came home!
  It's supposed to be in the mid 30's tonight, so I was forced to pick all my half ripe and green tomatoes and little cucumbers before they froze.I hope they ripen inside, but tomatoes, which are one of my favourite foods, taste so much better when they ripen on the vine. I waited all summer for my tomatoes and the majority of them were still trying to ripen and grow. I did  bring one big planter inside that has a tomato plant that was still blooming. I expect nothing will come of it, but it had so many blooms I thought, why not give it a chance?

Doll-A-Day 252: Pink Skinned Malibu Barbie Type: Fashion Fireworks Barbie

  Well first of all, I'm starting to feel better. I have only felt crappy about 3 times today, and I had a busy day full of doing stuff. So hopefully I am on the way to being all better. I am waaay tired of feeling bad. This needs to be over.
  One of the things I did today was make a find at Salvation Army. Technically I didn't actually make the find. I was told about it. But then I went over and made the score, so that counts. Right? I'll tell you about that tomorrow.

  UPDATE: Thanks to a reader the doll has been identified as Fashion Fireworks Barbie.
  Today's doll is one I don't know the name of for sure, so hopefully someone can help me here.

 

All I know is that she's a European Barbie, possibly Super Fashion Fireworks Barbie. If anybody knows if there was another pale, pink skinned doll using the Malibu Barbie style face paint and head mold, (which is actually the Barbie friend Stacey head mold), let me know.

She is wearing her original swimsuit, and this is what she was wearing when I got her.

As you can see, she's basically Malibu Barbie after learning the dangers of tanning. Or maybe she's just Malibu Barbie before the tanning.

  She has lighter, slightly more silky pale blonde hair than Malibu Barbie. (Maybe Malibu Barbie spent more time in a chlorinated pool.)

Doll-A-Day 251: Bettina by Sebino

  Today's doll is one that truly qualifies as 'The One That Got Away'. She's Bettina.

 I had Bettina, but due to financial requirements at the time, I had to sell her. I have regretted it ever since.

Her vinyl has such a glowy, realistic skin tone.

She was such a beautiful doll that I had a hard time trimming down my photo selections for her auction listing! She was just so photogenic that they were all gorgeous.These are all I have left.

Bettina was made in Italy by Sebino.I got her at the auction where I bought so many Italian dolls that I was dreaming about sorting Italian dolls.

Look at that curl. She was in such nice condition.

She's about 16" tall.

She's a little short legged and stubby. I can relate!

She's strung, so her legs and arms can go out to the sides as well as up and down.

She kind of has 'man hands'.Actually, they're very Sasha-like. What's the connection?

She has sleep eyes.This picture gives a good view of her eye make up. Also notice her neck joint.

 She was made somewhere around 1967.

The groovy dress she's wearing is The Turned On Mini dress for Ideal's Crissy. It looks great on her though.

The sleeves are lined in satin fabric.

 I doubt I'll have another opportunity to own a Bettina doll, and if I do, she probably won't be as beautiful as this one.

Doll-A-Day 250: Kiddle Kologne Apple Blossom

  Today's doll is a Kiddle Kologne named Apple Blossom.

Liddle Kiddles were introduced by Mattel in 1966.They were tiny rubber dolls with wire armatures, sort of like mini versions of Barbie's sister Tutti. In fact, some of them share Tutti's head mold.

Apple Blossom, like all Kiddles, has rooted hair, and is jointed at the neck. Her body and limbs are  bendable.

The Kologne Kiddles appeared in 1968.

They came in bottles, like cologne.Get it? The bottle opens all the way down, once the cap that holds it closed is removed.

There were nine different dolls, all named after flowers.

Her green hair is supposed to be like a green apple, and the flowers in her hair are apple blossoms.

The dolls are scented, sort of like Strawberry Shortcake dolls. Maybe that's where the inspiration for Strawberry Shortcake came from.

Her hair is still in it's original set.

Like Strawberry Shortcake, a Kiddle Kologne doll that still has it's scent is worth more.
Apple Blossom was produced in 1968 and '69.

The line was discontinued in 1970. Kiddles in general were discontinued in 1971, probably for the same safety issues that ended the Tutti line. Kiddles reappeared in the 90's,made by Tyco.They had a different style body and different head molds than the classic ('Klassic'?) Kiddles. They just didn't have the same charm.
