Doll-A-Day 2019 #46: Disney's Milo

Today we're looking at a doll that doesn't show up very often. It's this guy.

This doll is Milo Thatch, from the 2001 Disney film,"Atlantis, the Lost Empire".

This guy has never been displayed and has been stored in a tub for years. How can his forehead be dirty?
The character was voiced by Michael J. Fox.

More of that 'cat assistant' hair.
The movie concerned Milo and a group of explorers on a search for the lost city of Atlantis. Milo has a unique head sculpt, but he has the standard Mattel Ken body of the time.

He has the straight arms and legs that only slightly bend.

There's very little he can do with those flat hands. He can pretty much hail a cab or hail the Fuhrer. That's about it.

His head is very cartoon like, and has a lot of detail in his haircut.

Ken would describe a chin like that as a chin Milo could 'eat pickles out of a jar' with.

Atlantis was the first animated science fiction film Disney made.

It also made more use of computer animation than any Disney film to that date, and it's one of the few Disney animated films to use the anamorphic format. The movie used the distinctive style of comic book artist and creator Mike Mignola, best known for creating Hellboy. A linguist created a language specifically for the film, to be used by the Atlanteans.
Critical reaction to the film was mixed, and it failed to earn the kind of money Disney hoped.  A TV series based on the movie was given up on, as was an underwater attraction at Disneyland. There was a direct to video sequel though, released in 2003,entitled "Atlantis: Milo's Return". The original film was nominated for a number of awards, and today is considered a cult favourite.
Milo's outfit includes a pair of stretchy jodhpurs...

I've never changed his clothes, so his shirt is still stitched to his jodhpurs.

A shirt with two decal buttons...

...that Velcros in the back...

...a pair of brown shoes...

...and of course,his glasses.

They are actually removable, and unlike some of the Harry Potter dolls, they don't pull out of and leave  holes in Milo's head when they're removed.  In spite of that, they stay on really well.

Milo also came with an extra 'Atlantis' outfit and a jewel necklace,as well as his book.

So long from Milo!

Tomorrow there will, of course, be another doll.

  1. I'm not sure what to think of this one, he's very geeky with the glasses on but actually doesn't look so bad at all without them. His arms and flat hands are a bit odd though!
I've never heard of this film, I guess you'll not be surprised by that LOL

  2. He looks a little surprised without his glasses. I wonder why they molded him that way.

    1. I guess they were more worried about how he looked with the glasses, and that looked better with the frames.
