Today's doll is this Sindy doll. Sorry about the nudity, but I don't have any clothes for her. I bought her this way.
And a belly button. |
She's 11 inches tall. |
It flops around like real hair. What? Doesn't everybody's hair flop around? Mine does. |
Sindy was made by Pedigree in England, and later Hasbro, Vivid Imaginations, and New Moons. Ken's sister Gloria had a Sindy as a kid. She thinks she may still have all her old Sindy stuff in her attic, or as they call it in England, 'the loft'. In the late 1970's Marx made Sindy for the American market. They weren't successful. I keep reading that they made her look more American. What does that mean? What does an American look like? Americans are everything. We can look any way. How can you tell an American from an Englishman if they don't talk? Well, I usually can, but most people can't.
In the late 1980's the rights were bought by Hasbro. Hasbro produced a Sindy that had a more realistic sized head, who looked more like a standard fashion doll. This wasn't as popular as the original Sindy had been, but they continued to make small head Sindy until the mid 90's. Hasbro were sued by Mattel for copyright infringement at one point because Mattel thought the latest Sindy sculpt looked too much like Barbie. How they got away with that I'll never know. These days, and even then really, there are loads of companies that make fashion dolls, some direct rip offs of Barbie's face, and they get away with it. How can you copyright a realistic head anyway? Copying the face directly is one thing, but just making a fashion doll is another. I don't think Sindy ever looked like Barbie.
The Tonner Sindys were, like all Tonner dolls, a bit pricey. The clothes made for her were too. I got this girl because she was an unbelievable price at the show. I might let her go to pay for what else I bought. But I'm getting quite attached to her. That hair and tilting head won me over.
That's today's doll. See you tomorrow for another one.
Beautiful hair
ReplyDeleteYeah, definitely keep her. Sindy is awesome. I'm fortunate enuff to own a Marx Sindy and she's amazing. I think she might've sold better here in the States if Marx hadn't sold her in a drab brown-on-brown dress (I think it's cute, but that's just me). I think Sindy IS Tammy, by the way. I read somewhere that Pedigree bought Tammy's molds from Ideal (or somesuch like that), but they had to name the doll something else. Now your pet needs something nice to wear, before it gets cold!
ReplyDeleteTammy and Sindy are similar in body, but I don't think they have the same head. As I mentioned to Dorothy, I would love to get her a mod era outfit. We'll see what I can find. Most of the Tammy/Sindy size vintage clothes I have are pre-mod.
DeleteShe is pretty. I can see why you like her. And not everybody's hair flops around (laugh) just saying.
ReplyDeleteShe definitely needs some clothes. You must at least put underwear on her so she doesn't (or you don't) get arrested by the doll police (smile).
That was a joke. My hair is especially floppy. That's pretty much all it does. I would love to get her some vintage style clothing at least, if not actual vintage. Something mod era, I think. The Tonner clothes are so expensive though. I thought about making her something, but I'm not much of a seamstress.
DeleteYour Tonner Sindy is beautiful! You should definitely keep her. I love her hair - even if it is floppy. :-) I have two Sindys. One I found at a thrift store and one I got from eBay. They are both blonde and their hair quality isn’t great. I’d love to get one of the new Sindys that came out a few years ago, but they were only sold in England and Australia I think.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could do a trade with somebody in England or Australia. Shipping from Australia to the U.S. is horrible though. England isn't quite as bad. If you can ship a doll in a sitting position, it's cheaper, as a box under 12 inches costs a lot less to ship.
DeleteYeah maybe. I’ll have to look at shipping costs from the UK. My birthday is coming up soon. Maybe I’ll use some birthday money to figure out how to get ahold of one of these dolls.

Which Sindy is it you want from the UK Esther? Is it the 2022 ones? I can ask friends and family if they can find any cheap, maybe second hand.
DeleteI sent you an email.
