As you may or may not know, we live in Marion, Ohio. Marion has few claims to fame. There's a popcorn industry here, Fred Astaire once played the Palace Theatre downtown, (and so did all of my kids, as that's where the schools had their Christmas Programmes.), and we gave the world President Warren G. Harding. Woo Hoo. Harding is considered one of the worst presidents ever. But whatever. He's still here. And he is "still here". One of the few things Marion can offer a tourist, is the Harding Memorial, wherein President Harding, and his wife Florence are entombed.
Tammy World has been wanting to give you a tour of Marion for ages. Of course, she chose a freezing cold day to do it! It was snowing today, for Heaven's sake. But she insisted, so here is her tour of the Harding Memorial.
Sorry about the blurry picture. As soon as I tried to take a picture, my shutter froze. Can't say I blame it. I was freezing myself! But that did mean that I was forced to use my phone, and I can't get Tammy and the memorial in focus at the same time.
The memorial looks like marble, but I noticed today that it's a weird, grainy looking marble. At least the steps are.
The blue thing on the right that looks like a space ship, is the do-hinkey with all the information on it.

Sorry about the bird poo. |
It doesn't look like this next picture any more. There's more stuff built all around it now.
And inside are the actual tombs of the Prez and his wife. And there's a tree too. I swear there used to be a bigger one, right in the middle of that back wall. Maybe it was getting big enough to do damage and they took it out. But it was big enough that it could be seen from the road, through the bars.
Looks like the grass has been recently mowed. And why is it so green?! It's December! Nowhere else is that green.
Case in point, the dull dead grass at the side of the memorial area. I found this little flag. It was either left over from some 'do' at the memorial, or it blew across from the cemetery across the street, the one that's always advertising that it's having a big sale. (??!!)
Tammy wanted to show you the big hill at the side of the memorial grounds. When it's snowy, everybody, (including us), brings their kids here to go sledding. Being right next to a tomb isn't the worst part. The worst part is having to be sure to dodge the trees at the bottom of the hill!
You can't really tell, but it's quite a slope.
That's it for today's edition of The Twelve Days of Tammy World. See you again tomorrow for Day six.
Bad president or good, he's still part of American history and thus worth being remembered. And what a beautiful monument! You've got some cool stuff in your neck of the woods.
ReplyDeleteTammy is the best tour guide. I hope you tipped her for her services (laugh).
